About Match

Arsenal vs Atleti Analysis:

Even though the first leg in the Metropolitano ended 1-1, Atletico ended with the better momentum (more shots, more chances, more possession). After a cagy first half, Diego Simeone's men came out of the blocks in the second half and only lacked a pinch of luck to claim victory.

Today, Arsenal will surely go for the opponent more than they did in the first leg. The Emirates will be bouncing, further fueled by City's draw last night. Atletico Madrid will be calculative and will prioritise compactness over attack, while being aware that they'll have their moment.

I expect Arsenal to be fierce on the flanks with Eze, Madueke, Saka and co. I also expect Atletico to double mark on the flanks : Lookman helping out Ruggeri and Giuliano helping out Llorente. Atletico applied this strategy and defended so well in the first leg conceding only 1 shot on target from open play all game.

Arsenal going all out will also mean Arsenal losing some of its defensive essence from the first leg. That's where Atleti's plan lies, switching play to capitalise on the pace of their forwards.

As we have seen with Atletico this season, it's not all about low-block defence. There will be moments when they have Arsenal against the ropes too.

While I think Arsenal will be more aggressive than in the first leg, I believe Atletico Madrid comes in with the better momentum and flow and if they can take their chances (which they couldn't in the first leg) they'll get over the line.

Contrary to the odds, I fancy Atletico Madrid tonight.
